Rancho Margot is an eco-lodge and working farm in northern Costa Rica that demonstrates how agriculture, renewable energy, water management, and forest conservation can work together as one sustainable system.

Rancho Margot produces food and renewable energy by working with the natural processes already occurring. Flowing water is directed through small hydroelectric generators, sunlight is captured by solar panels, and microorganisms inside biodigesters break down animal waste and release methane-rich biogas that can be used for cooking. Composting accelerates the natural decomposition of organic material, returning nutrients to the soil, while forests and diverse vegetation help retain water, protect soil, and support pollinators. The farm does not create these processes; it manages the land and its resources so they can provide food and energy within the same ever-renewing environment.
The property’s location near Arenal Volcano helps support sustainable living. Warm temperatures and regular rainfall extend the growing season, while volcanic material has added minerals to the surrounding soils over time. Rancho Margot builds its gardens and pastures around these conditions, choosing crops, livestock, and land-management practices suited to the local climate and soil.
The farm is organized so that resources move from one area to another. Pastures grow forage for livestock, the livestock produce manure that can be processed in biodigesters or composted into fertilizer. That fertilizer returns nutrients to the gardens and fields, which produce food for the kitchen. Food scraps and other organic waste can then reenter the same system through composting or biodigestion. The surrounding forests contribute to the system by holding soil in place, slowing runoff, protecting streams, and providing habitat for pollinators and other organisms that help cultivated areas.
These relationships make the farm more resilient because each part contributes resources to another. Soil supports plants, plants feed people and animals, organic waste supports the soil, and forests help protect the water and land on which the entire cycle depends.
Rancho Margot’s food system is therefore built around maintaining the natural processes that keep the landscape healthy and productive.
How Renewable Energy Helps Rancho Margot Operate Off the Grid
Rancho Margot was designed to be as self-sufficient as possible, including how it produces and uses energy. The farm generates much of its own power by using renewable resources already available on the farm. By combining hydroelectric power, solar energy, and energy produced by biodigesters, Rancho Margot demonstrates how different natural systems can work together to produce sustainable energy.
Rainfall falling on the slopes near Arenal Volcano replenishes the mountain streams that supply water to Rancho Margot’s hydroelectric generators. Solar panels provide additional renewable energy, helping increase the property’s overall energy production, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Renewable energy extends beyond electricity. Three biodigesters capture methane produced as animal waste naturally decomposes. Rancho Margot captures the methane-rich biogas produced by its biodigesters and pipes it to the kitchen, where it is used as fuel for cooking. The remaining nutrient-rich liquid is then returned to grazing fields as fertilizer, creating another one of many closed-loop systems within Rancho Margot.
These biodigesters illustrate one of Rancho Margot’s central principles: the output of one system can become the input for another. Food scraps and crop residues become compost that rebuilds soil fertility, water moving through the property generates electricity before continuing through the surrounding watershed, and animal waste becomes biogas for heating.
These combined systems produce most of the electricity used throughout the farm and eco-lodge, allowing Rancho Margot to operate independent of the national power grid.
The Nutrient Cycle

In a healthy ecosystem, nutrients are continually recycled. Fallen leaves, dead plants, food scraps, and animal waste are broken down by fungi, bacteria, and other decomposers. As that organic material decays, nutrients are released back into the soil and reabsorbed by plants. In this way, new plants are produced that will eventually return to the soil and begin the cycle again. Rancho Margot uses composting to keep this nutrient cycle active on the farm. Composting turns organic waste into fertile soil that can support future crops while reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers.
Animal waste also enters the cycle through the farm’s biodigesters. As microorganisms break down the waste in an oxygen-free chamber, they release methane-rich biogas that Rancho Margot captures and uses as cooking fuel. The material left after digestion still contains nutrients, so it is used in the gardens and pastures as fertilizer. Plants absorb those nutrients as they grow, livestock consume the vegetation, and their waste eventually returns to the biodigesters. In this way, one waste product produces both renewable energy and fertilizer while keeping nutrients in circulation on the farm.
Keeping nutrients in circulation on the farm also helps protect ecosystems beyond its boundaries. Preventing runoff reduces the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus entering nearby streams and ponds. When too many of these nutrients reach the water, they can trigger rapid algae growth. Dense algal blooms can spread across the surface and block sunlight from reaching submerged plants, limiting photosynthesis and weakening an important source of food and shelter for aquatic organisms.
The damage can continue after the algae die. Bacteria break down the dead material and consume dissolved oxygen in the process. If oxygen levels fall too low, fish, aquatic insects, and other organisms may become stressed, leave the area, or die. The loss of these species can disrupt food webs, reduce biodiversity, and alter how the entire aquatic ecosystem functions.
How Water Flows Through Every Part of the Farm
Every system at Rancho Margot depends on water. Water irrigates crops, generates hydroelectric power, sustains forests, and eventually returns to the surrounding watershed.
Rancho Margot manages the landscape so rainfall can move through it gradually. As rain falls, the forest canopy intercepts it, allowing it to fall with a softer, broken force to the forest floor. Water then drips through leaf litter, roots, and organic-rich soil, where much of it is absorbed and stored. Plant roots draw in some of that moisture and use it for growth and photosynthesis. Some eventually returns to the atmosphere through transpiration, while the rest seeps even deeper through the soil.
Part of that water replenishes groundwater, and more still moves slowly downhill beneath the surface until it reaches springs and nearby streams. By slowing and filtering the water at each stage, the landscape reduces erosion, limits sediment entering waterways, and helps fields and pastures retain moisture during drier periods.
Water leaving the kitchens, guest rooms, and other facilities is treated on the property before returning to the environment. Rancho Margot removes organic material and other contaminants from its wastewater and limits the use of synthetic chemicals that could enter nearby soil or streams. This protects the same water system that supports the farm, the forest, and surrounding communities.
After treatment, water returns to the streams and groundwater connected to the larger Lake Arenal watershed. From there, it continues moving through the natural water cycle that brought it there.
Higher elevations surrounding Arenal also create cloud forests, where persistent moisture helps regulate water moving through the landscape.
How Rancho Margot Protects Wildlife Beyond Its Fields

Rancho Margot protects wildlife by preserving approximately 100 hectares of reforested habitat on the property. These forested areas provide animals with food, shelter, nesting sites, and access to water.
The location of those forests also matters. They remain connected to other patches of vegetation around the farm, creating routes that animals can use to move between feeding, breeding, and sheltering areas. This movement between connected habitats is what ecologists mean by habitat connectivity.
That connectivity matters because many species do not remain inside one patch of forest. Birds move between feeding and nesting areas, pollinators travel between wild plants and crops, and mammals, reptiles, and amphibians depend on access to water, cover, and different food sources throughout the year. Forested streambanks and patches of native vegetation help animals move through the farm without crossing large areas of exposed ground.
The farm’s soil and water practices also affect wildlife beyond the areas being cultivated. Composting and nutrient recycling reduce fertilizer runoff, while healthy soils slow erosion and keep sediment out of nearby waterways. Cleaner streams support fish, aquatic insects, amphibians, and the larger food webs that depend on them. Reducing pollution on the farm therefore protects habitats downstream as well as those located directly on the property.
Rancho Margot shows how a working farm can contribute to conservation by protecting the ecological connections around it. Forest cover, clean water, native vegetation, and low-pollution farming practices allow food production to take place without removing every resource wildlife needs. The result is a landscape where agriculture supports, rather than interrupts, the movement of water, nutrients, plants, and animals across the wider ecosystem.
